Short fiction and poetry anthology
This colourful and quirky collection contains short stories, flash fiction, vignettes and poetry of various styles and genres. It developed over the course of 52 weeks in 2010/2011 whereby a series of ‘Sunday Snaps’ were posted online as a creative writing exercise. Writers were invited to use the snapshots as inspirational writing prompts. The result: an eclectic assortment of light-hearted comedy, romance, dark tales, tragedy, slice-of-life stories and expressive verse. While the spires of Milan Cathedral and a café in Toronto provide the backdrop to romance, elsewhere a marriage is arranged, children grapple with loss, and a woman rushes to the side of a life-long friend. With a bit of French cuisine, a spiteful kitty, a mother’s pact with the devil, a birthday kiss and a dash of supernatural revenge, this unique collection offers a tale for all! Stories and poetry by: Sam Adamson, Kim Bannerman, Cath Barton, Dominique Boller, Juliet Boyd, Jodi Cleghorn, Sandra Davies, Miriam Dunn, Rebecca Emin, Annie Evett, Stacey Faulkner, Wendy Ann Greenhalgh, D A Volpe Herskowitz, Stephen Hewitt, A J Humpage, Steve Isaak, Mandy K James, Susan May James, Maria Kelly, Mari Lee Kozlowski, Lisamarie Lamb, Shannon Lawrence, Tyrean Martinson, Tony Noland, Linda Olson, Roslyn Ross, Tony Schumacher, and Ren Thompson. Divergence, Deviation, Departure

Today after work I trucked myself—and a load of printouts!—to the library. My intention was to sit myself down, no distractions, and get to work. I figured if I worked solidly for a few hours I could make some real headway on a current project.

But, I just couldn’t settle. I was in one of those moods where I couldn’t focus, couldn’t make the transition from being at the ‘day job’ to being at the ‘night-and-every-second-in-between-job’, so to speak. I stared out the window, I people watched, I tweeted, and I thought about work. I even thought about what we should have for supper but then remembered that it’s Thursday and therefore takeaway night. (So no cooking, woohoo!) I then shuffled some papers around, dug out a different pen and finally decided that I just didn't want to do the work as planned!

It was time to diverge. Deviate. Depart from the plan!

Which meant wandering the stacks and nosing through books until something juicy caught my eye. And oh what a gem I found!

A Season in Granada (Translated and edited by Christopher Maurer.)
Why did I pluck this book from the shelf? Granada on the spine grabbed me. Can’t say why, perhaps in defiance of today’s bitter cold. But it was the back blurb and flipping through a few pages that really sucked me in. First there was the doodled on postcard he’d sent to Dali. Then there was this line;
‘...a green-purple moon appeared in the bluish mist of the Sierra Nevada, and just across the street a woman was singing a cradle song that tangled itself into the landscape like a golden streamer...’
Intriguing, sí?

This collection of poems, essays and letters by twentieth century Spanish poet Federico García Lorca was published to celebrate the centenary of his birth. The writings relate to the city that featured heavily in his life: Granada. A poet and musician, he was murdered by the Nationalist partisans on the eve of the Spanish Civil War.

I spent a good chunk of time pouring over the pieces in this book. The verdict? A very enjoyable, if spontaneous, read. I didn't get much work done, but what a treasure I escaped into!

Making Way!

So I've dusted off the old blog, cleared away the old bits and set myself up with a clean 'Scribble & Scatter' slate.  The time is well-nigh to get back to blogging.  I've been really rather naughty and neglectful of old Scribble but life is life and I've been swept away by a tide of rather crazed busyness! The new goal is to post on some sort of consistent basis. It won't be daily but I'm hoping it will at least be weekly. At the moment I'm working on a piece of flash fiction and a short review.
